2017/18 School Year
The Artist in Residence program is established thanks to the generous support from the SAS Foundation, including the PTA and other donors. Artists work in the drama classroom and also offer master classes after-school, which are available to any middle school student. This experience is a fabulous opportunity for student actors to work with professional actors and directors and be exposed to different styles and techniques in theater.
*No Show Policy: If you sign up for an after-school workshop, this is a commitment. Please discuss your participation with parents and put it in your personal and family calendars. You are holding a place that is no longer open to other students. If you are absent that day, please email Ms. Fulcher asap so she can contact people on the waiting list. If you do not show up for the workshop, you lose the right to sign up for another AIR workshop this school year.

BILL BOWERS: I have appeared on Broadway in The Lion King and The Scarlet Pimpernel, and in theatres throughout the United States and Europe. A student of the legendary mime Marcel Marceau, I now perform my solo plays throughout the world.
I live in New York City but grew up in the wilds of Montana and from a young age had an attraction to the “big quiet” of the vast western landscape. I began to study what can be said without using words which led me to the art of mime.
Bill has a huge presence on YouTube as one of the world premier mimes. Check him out!

Chris Salisbury -
Christopher's Biography
I'm a professional storyteller, educator, trainer and Artistic Director for the Westcountry Storytelling Festival. I was part of the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain ensemble, studied A-level Theatre, studied theatre at Kent University and then acted with various touring theatre companies. I then founded Scallywag Theatre-in-education Company and trained as a drama therapist.
In 1993, I told my first story, around the flickering flames of a campfire, and a love affair began with traditional storytelling that continues to the present day. The power and enchantment of the simple narrative form have been a revelation and has sustained my curiosity and passion for this mysterious, ancient, and purely oral tradition and what it can contribute to theatre-making.
Master Class Description: TO SLAY A DRAGON
The myths and stories of any society are a powerful reflection and shaper of how the world is seen and experienced. We tell stories to each other everyday, but are we aware of the distinct narrative forms of the oral tradition that underpin theatre-making?
In this masterclass we’ll distinguish the role of storyteller from actor, and experience the basic ingredients of what makes good narrative. There will be methods of learning, remembering and working with stories, devices and techniques that develop our capacity and inspiration for the mechanics of making good stories to tell.
This is an on-your-toes, seat-of-your-pants creative experience of storytelling and of course a new perspective on yourself as a 'storyteller!'

Matt Godfrey - will be joining us in May in conjunction with ISTA Telunas. (Matt last joined us at SAS in 2014)
Biography: I have been working as a professional actor since I was ten years old, starting on the TV show You can’t do that on television. As I grew up and studied the craft at the National Theatre School of Canada and the Moscow Art Theatre in Russia, my acting career expanded into dance, improvisation, dinner theatre, street performing, main stage, television and film. I firmly believe that the art of performing can elevate one’s life experience, enhance one’s inner and outer core, increase self-esteem and expand compassion for, and empathy with, the human condition. This adventure is my joy, only surpassed by seeing students’ faces as they explore, discover and create in ways they had never thought of before. Now located in Los Angeles, I have expanded my career into producing, directing and post-production. These entertainment-industry experiences have provided me with an entirely new way of looking at the craft I teach and help me approach students with a fresh and contemporary outlook, while integrating academic and theatrical disciplines dramatically, technically, musically, culturally, historically and thematically.
My job as a teacher is to instil and foster creativity, empowering students to make the connections that no one has
seen before. I am sneaky. I take students through the back door of performance techniques and styles, while removing pre-conceived ideas that thwart and block full participation and creativity. We play, discover and will never forget and students all learn the Russian curtain-call step dance.

BIOGRAPHY: With great pleasure I play with puppets every day and call it a job. When not joyfully sharing my Puppet Pizzazz performances and workshops in schools, I crash parties with outrageous larger-than-life puppet characters that are “the life of the party”.I believe there is power in puppetry for the performer as well as the audience. As a performer I lose my inhibitions, saying things that the “shy me” would only dream of. In turn the audience loses their inhibitions and they respond in an animated way that reaffirms to me the power of puppetry. After college I was an actor at the prestigious Alley Theatre, created the award winning Children’s Theatre of Houston, attended American National Puppetry Conferences, conducted residencies in schools in China and Africa, toured India with Very Special Arts, was staff for Puppeteers of America Festivals and the 2015 ISTA middle school Eden festivalGreg Ruhe's WorkshopsTuesday, May 10 - 3:30 to 5:30 pm Location: Theater StudioDescription: “Light ! Louise Clark - BIOGRAPHY
Since stepping out onto the stage (wooden floor boards which were guaranteed to give you a splinter) at the tender age of six, to play the title role of The little angel in our tiny, country-village school Christmas play, I have had a passion for theatre. I spent every Saturday morning from the age of ten to eighteen in the experienced and nurturing hands of Calderdale Theatre School, learning skills for t
he stage but also the importance of ensemble and the sense of empowerment that a creative environment can give to young people. My artistic light-bulb moment came when I found myself earning a crust as a classroom assistant in a local primary school; children + theatre = an endless supply of excitement, imagination, creativity and the rewards of seeing pupils learn and grow as people. I formalised my thoughts by gaining an MA in drama and theatre education and I now run my own theatre company, creating interactive performances for children. I also work closely with teachers and educators, exploring and developing new ways of using drama as a tool to engage young people in their learning and how to use theatre to open doors to new worlds and new minds.
My workshops begin by making a puppet or choosing an object to bring to life. By giving students the skills and structure to make a simple puppet themselves they have ownership of, and an immediate connection with, the puppet they animate.

Megan Campisi - October 7-8, 2014
MASTER CLASSES on offer...
"Breath life into the inanimate"
Puppetry: A puppeteer breathes life in to otherwise inanimate objects. A puppeteer has the power to make you care and emotionally connect with a construct of basic materials. I believe that anything can be brought to life by a skilled puppeteer who transfers all of his/her energy into another creature, not caring for himself, only the new life he has created. Learning to be a puppeteer means learning a very specific skill, but it also means learning patience, co-operation, subtlety and focus.
Megan Campisi
I blame my father. While other children heard bedtime stories from the Brothers Grimm, I was sent to sleep accompanied by oral accounts of the Peloponnesian War. And this shaped me into what I am today: a really big nerd—I mean, a storyteller.
I started out with the same goal as many young artists: work as a forest ranger, learn how to milk goats—oh, and become a famous stage actress. Perhaps it was my passion for diverse experiences (oh, those ornery goats!) or memories of my dad, but pretty soon acting just wasn’t enough. I wanted to make plays. So after getting a BA degree at Yale University in Theater Studies, I went off to L’Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris (with a brief stint as an Object Theater puppeteer and Shakespeare training at RADA). Following the two-year program at the Lecoq School, I was totally ready (not true at all) to make my own theater. I gathered friends and colleagues into a company (www.goldnotrade.com) and started to do what playmaker Jon Wright calls “mucking about.”
My company makes plays together in a process called Devising. I start with a geek’s worth of research and maybe a storyboard and maybe a couple of dashed-out scenes. I bring these into the rehearsal room, where the company takes these “blueprints” and sets about “building” a play. We do improvisations. We try out scenes. We laugh. I rewrite. And somewhere along the way, a play takes shape. The creation process recalls the nightly childhood push-and-pull of storyteller and audience, first in the rehearsal room, and, later, with invited audiences at in-progress showings. My collaborators provide the same honest feedback I once gave my father: go faster, tell that part again, do the funny bit. And the work is stronger for it.
Then something huge happened. I had been teaching workshops here and there, sharing what I love to do, when I realized that teaching wasn’t just something I did when I wasn’t doing my art. Teaching was part of my art. My students are collaborators too. We learn from each other. And—just like with my company members—the work is stronger for it.
Since that discovery, I’ve taught all over the world: at universities like Yale and the Shanghai Theatre Academy, at International Schools from Beijing to New Delhi, and at public schools near my home in Brooklyn, New York.
Class Description: Commedia dell’Arte
What do the Simpsons and 16th-century Italy have in common? More than you think. Commedia dell’Arte is a classic Italian physical comedy form that combines masks and improvisation to essentially create live cartoons. In this workshop, we start with the social-historical context of Commedia and then quickly dive into the characters. Students learn the basics of improv, slapstick, masked performance and physical theater. We finish by performing short scenarios.
Monday, November 23 to Wednesday, November 25, 2015.
Joachim Matschos was our first in-class visiting artist this school year.
He wrote this year's high school IASIS play and we are excited to work with him for 3 days.
Joachim Matschoss was born in Germany and now lives in Melbourne/Australia. He is a playwright, poet and Theatre-maker. His Theatre Company, ‘Backyard Theatre Ensemble (BYTE)’ presents diverse pieces of theatre all across Melbourne/ Australia and internationally, both Youth Arts and for adults. Joachim has created theatre in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, India, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, HongKong, Hungary and China. Joachim is fascinated by creating work from scratch, starting with a thought, image, or a piece of music. It is inevitable that a piece of theatre will grow, will happen. There is always a story to tell, to listen to. Joachim is less interested in seeing a piece of theatre grow like a flower, but more so like a weed, something raw, something with cracks, and something that is challenging both the performer and the audience member.
‘When it is noisy, don’t sing or speak, not even shout! Draw and sculpt your thoughts.’ (J.Jiminez) Sometimes silence says more than a thousand words. ‘The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new landscapes but in having new eyes.’ (M.Proust) For more information go to the website: www.byteensemble.com
